Become a Journalist: Report the News!

This Specialization will develop and enhance your understanding of the global field of journalism. Through hands-on projects, peer-to-peer feedback, and issue exploration, you'll learn best practices and ethical standards for newsgathering processes and compiling a news report. You will also study journalism's impact on societal issues and trends, plus explore career opportunities in various journalism formats.

The course consists of five modules:

  1. What is news?
  2. Gathering and Developing the News
  3. Effectively delivering the news to your audience
  4. Journalism, the future, and you!
  5. Capstone: Create your own professional journalistic portfolio

Throughout the course, you'll explore the basics of professional journalism, news values and ethics, newsgathering techniques, reporting and writing for different audiences, and career paths available in journalism. The final Capstone project will guide you through the journalistic portfolio process, where you will conceptualize, report, and complete a professional-quality news report.

Course Modules

This course consists of five modules that cover the basics of professional journalism, newsgathering techniques, reporting for different audiences, and career opportunities in journalism.

What is news?

This course will guide you through the basic elements of professional journalism, news values, and ethics. You will learn about the different types of journalism and how professional journalists effectively utilize each format, including social media, multimedia, print, visual, and broadcast.

Gathering and Developing the News

This module focuses on the development of information through interviews and sources. You will learn about newsgathering, interviewing skills, and processing information from various sources for publication.

Effectively delivering the news to your audience

Being a successful journalist involves more than hunting down information; it's about effectively processing and delivering the news. This module covers the process, planning, and requirements of how journalists develop their news reports, exploring different forms of reporting and writing for diverse audiences.

Journalism, the future, and you!

Explore career paths available in journalism and the opportunities the skill sets of a journalist can offer in other fields. This module also delves into the ethical and responsible practices of journalism and discusses how journalists handle pressure, threats, and other dangers while doing their jobs.

Capstone: Create your own professional journalistic portfolio

This module is the culmination of the course, where you will create your own professional journalistic portfolio. You will go through all the steps and skills used by professional journalists, culminating in the creation of your own news report from start to finish.
