University of Copenhagen

We all need clean air to survive, yet air pollution continues to pose a significant threat to global health. The course "Air Pollution – a Global Threat to our Health" offered by University of Copenhagen delves into the detrimental effects of air pollution, both indoors and outdoors, and provides a comprehensive understanding of its sources and spread. Participants will explore the latest research in this field and gain insights into the health impacts of air pollution, including its association with various diseases. The course aims to educate individuals on how to assess the effects of air pollution and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing deaths and illnesses caused by hazardous chemicals and air, water, and soil pollution.

Through engaging with experts and researchers from the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark, participants will acquire knowledge in toxicology, exposure assessment, epidemiology, engineering, and health impact assessment. The modules cover topics such as the sources and composition of air pollution, its impact on vulnerable groups, and measures to mitigate outdoor and indoor air pollution. Additionally, the course provides valuable insights into the global burden of air pollution and offers practical solutions to tackle this pressing issue.

Course Modules

The course modules cover a wide array of topics, including the sources and composition of air pollution, the impact of air pollution on vulnerable groups, and measures to mitigate outdoor and indoor air pollution. Participants will also gain insights into the global burden of air pollution and practical solutions to tackle this critical issue.

The air we breathe

The first module, "The air we breathe," provides an in-depth understanding of the sources and composition of air pollution, its effects on the body, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to air pollution. Participants will also explore emerging hazards and improved understanding of risk, as well as practical solutions for addressing air pollution in specific regions such as Delhi.

Outdoor air pollution

The second module, "Outdoor air pollution," focuses on the epidemiological principles of air pollution, vulnerable groups affected by outdoor air pollution, and the global burden of this issue. Participants will learn about urban health, the burden of air pollution in different countries, and practical measures to address outdoor air pollution on a local level.

Indoor air pollution

The third module, "Indoor air pollution," delves into the impact of solid fuel in households and tight buildings on indoor air quality. Participants will also gain insights from the World Health Organization and the Environmental Protection Agency on addressing indoor air pollution and improving air quality in homes.
