Nuclear fuel management: a practical approach

Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

The Nuclear fuel management course, offered by Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, is a specialized program divided into three MOOCs:

  1. Front-end of the nuclear fuel cycle
  2. Back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle
  3. In-core fuel management

Students delve into the Integrated Nuclear Fuel Cycle Information System, learning about nuclear fuel cycle facilities, uranium deposits, and thorium resources worldwide. They develop skills to estimate material requirements, perform basic calculations for nuclear fuel and reactor core design, and calculate the levelized nuclear fuel cycle cost.

Nuclear fuel management: a practical approach
Course Modules

The course encompasses three modules: front-end of the nuclear fuel cycle, back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle, and in-core fuel management. Students gain comprehensive knowledge and skills in nuclear fuel management and reactor core design.

Out of core nuclear fuel management: front end

Out of core nuclear fuel management: front end

Students recognize and describe the basic principles of the front end of the fuel cycle, acquire updated information and knowledge about the subject, and develop skills to perform basic calculations of the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle.

Out of core nuclear fuel management: back end

Out of core nuclear fuel management: back end

Upon completion of this MOOC, students recognize and describe the basic principles of the back end of the fuel cycle, acquire updated information and knowledge about the subject, and develop skills to perform basic calculations of the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle.

In core nuclear fuel management

In core nuclear fuel management

Students gain comprehensive knowledge in nuclear fuel management and reactor core design. They learn to list and understand the basic parameters involved in in-core fuel management, including the estimation of fuel batch reload fraction and enrichment for equilibrium cycles using the linear reactivity method.
