Sustainable Cities

This Specialization equips individuals and organizations with the skills and strategies necessary to create and support sustainable cities. Through four comprehensive courses, participants will gain an in-depth understanding of tools and concepts essential for success in achieving sustainable urban environments.

The course focuses on evaluating and assessing successful case studies of smart growth applications in multiple cities across the United States. Participants will learn about sustainable regional principles, regional planning, transportation system issues, and sustainable neighborhoods. Additionally, the program covers sustainable transportation networks and streetscapes, as well as transportation, sustainable buildings, and green construction.

Throughout the program, participants will explore a range of topics, including smart urban planning, growth, and lifestyle strategies, as well as considerations for creating equitable, healthy, and sustainable communities. The curriculum also delves into best practices for community involvement and strategies for growth priorities, green space protection, sourcing quality food from local growers, and reducing urban pollution footprints.

Course Modules

This course offers four modules covering sustainable regional principles, sustainable neighborhoods, sustainable transportation networks and streetscapes, and transportation, sustainable buildings, and green construction. Students will delve into essential concepts and strategies for creating sustainable urban environments.

Sustainable Regional Principles, Planning and Transportation

This course provides an introduction to sustainable regional principles, regional planning, and transportation system issues. Participants will learn about the relationship between regional principles, smart growth, and sustainability, and evaluate growth priorities, community involvement, and regional mapping of rural preserves and districts. It is suitable for government officials, private sector companies, architects, foundations, academic faculty and students, and private citizens interested in sustainable development.

Sustainable Neighborhoods

Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of neighborhoods as part of sustainable cities and explore the components and structures that create sustainable neighborhoods. The course includes case studies of neighborhood development projects and reviews the importance of zoning for sustainable neighborhoods. This module is beneficial for individuals with a general understanding of public/private projects, an interest in urban planning, and knowledge of environmental protection plans and projects.

Sustainable Transportation Networks and Streetscapes

This module evaluates best practices in transportation networks, thoroughfares, and streetscape designs for effective movement in a region. Participants will learn about strategies for creating equitable, healthy, and sustainable communities. The target audience includes government officials, private sector companies, architects, foundations, academic faculty and students, and private citizens interested in community sustainability and resilience.

Transportation, Sustainable Buildings, Green Construction

Participants will explore best practices in parking strategies for sustainable cities, evaluation of building forms, green building construction principles, and architectural design considerations. This module is suitable for government officials, private sector companies, architects, foundations, academic faculty and students, and private citizens interested in community sustainability and improvement.
