An Introduction to Assessment Theory and Practice

This module introduces assessment theory and practice, including the purposes of assessment, formative and summative assessment, and integrating assessment with instruction. Participants will explore the impact of cultural perspectives on educational assessment and engage in discussions to enhance their understanding.

The nature of feedback in improving teaching and learning

Participants will delve into feedback effectiveness, including Hattie & Timperley’s framework, and the role of feedback in improving teaching and learning. The module also covers cultural perspectives on appropriate feedback mechanisms and includes opportunities for interviews and peer assessment.

Reporting student achievement

This module focuses on reporting student achievement, emphasizing the importance of useful feedback and the limitations of grades, ranks, and scores. Participants will explore reporting against objectives and engage in discussions to deepen their understanding of reporting mechanisms.

Guidelines for developing and using objectively answered question procedures

Guidelines for developing and using objectively answered question procedures are explored in this module, covering the anatomy of a good multiple-choice question, valid alternatives to bad questions, and peer assessment opportunities to apply the knowledge gained.

Guidelines for developing and using human judgement scoring procedures

Participants will learn about human judgment scoring procedures, including the errors to be aware of, analytic and holistic rubric design, essay marking, and the importance of moderation. Engaging discussions and a quiz offer practical application of the concepts.

Guidelines for developing and using procedures that involve students in assessment

This module provides insights into involving students in assessment, focusing on the rationale and goals of student involvement, good peer and self-assessment practices, and the concerns around validity. Interviews and quizzes enhance the learning experience.
