Designing and Building Institutional Antiracist Spaces (D-BIAS) is a transformative course offered by Wesleyan University. This course is designed to equip educators, administrators, lawyers, and advocates with the tenets of equity, anti-racism, and cultural justice to effect social change. Through a comprehensive curriculum, participants will learn to become designers of cultural equity and build their own workshops at their institutions.
The course delves into crucial topics such as racial justice training, implicit bias, systemic bias, and the societal and individual narratives shaping our understanding of cultural equity. Participants will explore the four eras of criminal legal (in)justice in U.S. history, learn to shift narratives around looting, rioting, and protesting, and put their knowledge into action by creating a cultural equity plan. The course encourages an inclusive learning environment open to all who share the vision of social change entrepreneurship.

Welcome to D-BIAS, where participants are introduced to the course and its mission to teach tenets of equity, anti-racism, and cultural justice for social change. Participants will explore past, present, and future racial justice training, implicit bias, and examples of bias through personal stories.
In this module, participants delve into the four eras of criminal legal (in)justice in U.S. history, understand how to apply a restorative approach, and explore the tools for justice design. They will also analyze the history of race riots and engage in a community revitalization project.
This module focuses on shifting narratives around looting, rioting, and protesting through poetry discussions, anti-racist workshop videos, and historical reflections on policing and race riots. Participants will also respond to challenges of disruption and frustration.
Participants will learn to put their knowledge into action by creating a cultural equity plan, building their own lab, and implementing steps for change. They will develop a strong plan with historical context and assess sustainable justice for their institutions.
