Developing Your Musicianship

Nurture your love for, and understanding of, music with the Developing Your Musicianship specialization. This course covers the fundamentals of music theory, including major and minor tonalities, chord scales, song forms, and chord qualities. Throughout the course, you will practice training your ear to recognize various intervals, chord progressions, and chord qualities.

As you progress, you will learn to identify musical intervals, chords, and chord progressions by ear, compose major and minor scales in various keys, and create a 12-bar blues with a melody. The course also delves into harmonic function and modal interchange, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of these advanced concepts.

The capstone project allows you to directly apply the knowledge gained throughout the course by writing and performing a short musical composition. Whether you're a beginner or an intermediate musician, this specialization equips you with the knowledge and skills to improve and enhance your musicianship.

Course Modules

The Developing Your Musicianship specialization covers everything from constructing and playing scales, identifying intervals and chords, to composing and performing musical compositions, providing a comprehensive understanding of music theory and musicianship.

Developing Your Musicianship

Module 1 focuses on constructing, singing, and playing scales such as the major scale and the minor pentatonic scale. You will also learn to aurally identify major intervals, construct and play triads and 7th chords, and compose a I-IV-V chord progression in the key of C Major.

Musicianship: Chord Charts, Diatonic Chords, and Minor Keys

Module 2 delves into chord charts, diatonic chords, and minor keys. You will learn to aurally identify minor intervals and 7th chords, understand the relationship between a Major key and its related minor, and practice playing and writing in different keys such as F Major and D minor.

Musicianship: Tensions, Harmonic Function, and Modal Interchange

Module 3 covers tensions, harmonic function, and modal interchange. You will explore chord tensions, harmonic function, aural identification of chord progressions and qualities, and identifying modal interchange chords in a composition.

Developing Your Musicianship: Final Project

Module 4, the Final Project, is where you'll compose an AABA style song, practice and perform your composition on your instrument, and create a simple recording of your performance while further developing your ear for intervals, chords, and chord progressions.
